Akshaywat Rai (22 December 1899 – 10 November 1963) was a famous freedom fighter from Bihar. He played an important role in the state of Bihar during movements like non-cooperation movement and August Revolution. Out of respect he is often called ‘Akshayvat Babu.
Early life:
On 22 December 1899, Akshayvat Rai, the son of the one who fought for the Republic of India, was born on the land of Vaishali, the world’s first republic. His father’s name was Nirsu Rai and mother’s name was Kamala Devi, he belonged to Yaduvanshi Ahir family of Kakarhatta village of Sheetalpur police station of Bindupur block.

Role in freedom movement:
During his school days, his passion to participate in the country’s freedom struggle began to grow.
On 01 August 1920, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, the bugle of non-cooperation movement was sounded in the entire country in which Akshayvat Babu also left his college studies. It was during the non-cooperation movement that Mahatma Gandhi came to Hajipur where he established ‘Gandhi Ashram’ on 7 December 1920, which later became the workplace of Akshayvat Babu.
During the non-cooperation movement, Paras sons like Akshayvat Babu, under the leadership of Dr. Rajendra Prasad, took out a procession from Sadaqat Ashram in Patna. The British government ordered a horse to ride on the procession, after which all the agitators including Akshayvat Babu lay down on the ground But the captain withdrew the decision saying that the army would fight the fighters and not the Satyagrahis.
On behalf of the Congress, there was a program to hoist the tricolor on the government building on 15 February 1922. Under the leadership of Akshayvat Babu in Hajipur, the flag was hoisted on the court, which is an important event in the history of Vaishali district.
Saddened by the Chaura theft incident of 05 February 1922, Gandhiji ended the non-cooperation movement, which shocked the young revolutionary.
He went to jail during the prohibition movement and the case was heard in Hajipur court and he and his companions were brought to Muzaffarpur jail. At that time, prisoners were made to wear wooden planks around their necks, which were called ‘Tauk Despite the police administration’s best efforts, he did not wear ‘Tauk’. The police IG defeated him and freed him and his comrades by ‘Tauk’, this was a big victory, later he became the leader of the prisoners.
After the suspension of the non-cooperation movement, Akshayvat Rai along with his young revolutionaries joined the Hindustan Republican Association, the party of revolutionary leader Sachindra Sanyal.
After joining the HRA Army, Akshayvat Babu became an thorn in the eye of the British rule due to his revolutionary activism. During this period, the British rule destroyed the crops of his fields many times and confiscated his house many times, but still he did not kneel before the British rule.
When Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged on 23 March 1931, a message was sent by the revolutionaries of Punjab to the revolutionaries of Bihar according to which Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were hanged by the British of the revolutionary comrades of Bettiah, Bihar. The revolutionaries of Bihar were disturbed when they testified on behalf of.
A meeting of revolutionaries was held in Sadakat Ashram in which Akshayvat Rai, Baikunth Shukla, Kishori Prasanna Singh and his wife Sunita Sinha etc. participated and were eager to kill anyone who testified against Bhagat Singh. When there was no consensus among the revolutionaries, there was talk of tossing everyone’s name.
After which Sunita Sinha tossed the names of five revolutionaries in which the name of Baikunth Shukla came. Baikunth Shukla along with Roshan Singh ended his testimony against Bhagat Singh.
Under the leadership of Babu Akshayvat Rai, Chowkidari Tax Ban Movement was successfully launched in Hajipur and surrounding areas.
Akshayvat Babu spent 13 years in jail for the freedom of Mother India. The British government auctioned off a lot of his land. Once the British government whipped him 134 times but he still did not bow his head before the British rule.
Akshayavat Babu was one of the founding members of “Bihar Socialist Party”. During the India Movement (August Revolution) of 1942, the line was cut in Bindupur area on 09 August 1942 under his leadership. Akshayvat Babu along with Jayaprakash Narayan and Ram Manohar Lohia played an important role in the formation of Azad Dasta.
Died :
Babu Akshayvat Rai died on 10 November 1963 at his residence in Vaishali district. This was the story of the rock-solid ideals of the best Indian values and tradition. We all are proud of him and he will always continue to inspire the nation.
Heritage :
After his death, another freedom fighter of that area, Babu Sitaram Singh, wrote in his memory. Established “Akshayvat Rai College – Mahua” and later ‘Akshayvat Rai Stadium’ was also established in Hajipur city.
The Government of India changed the name of Bindupur railway station to “Akshayvat Rai Nagar” in honor of Akshayvat Babu.
